A few Sundays back, I went to The Garage in Chilwell where they hold food and craft markets every weekend. I was keen to find Dukki Gifts’ stall as I’d started following them on Instagram. They’re an independent online gift shop and use a lot of Notts / East Midlands words and sayings such as, “ayup me duck”.
I was looking at a tea towel of Nottingham phrases, with translations, when I came across knobby greens. I’d never heard that expression. It means Brussels sprouts and I imagine many a Nottingham child has been told to eat up your knobby greens. What a cracking phrase. I love it.
Here’s a link to Dukki Gifts. Great products at really good prices.

Knobby greens is definitely a new one for me, Liz. But it’s brilliant and I’ll never call a sprout a sprout again!😂

Great word, Liz. I love dialect and now I’m living in the East Midlands there’s a whole new world of words to explore!

Welcome to the East Midlands! I’ve lived in various parts for over 40 years now and I’m still learning new words.

Not one I’ve heard before, but I feel I might have to ‘borrow’ it sometime…. Great word!

It might be something Augusta Grace uses – I’m thinking she’ll have picked words everywhere with all that travelling around on the dirigible!….
